Before You Move Checklist—The Most Important Things to Do
August 30, 2023
Moving can be an exciting and stressful experience at the same time. Whether you’re moving across the street, across town or to a new province, it’s important to plan ahead to ensure a smooth and successful move. To help you stay organized, here is a checklist of the most important things to do before a move.
- Declutter and organize
Before packing, it’s highly recommended to declutter and organize your belongings. This is probably the best tip to ensure your move goes smoothly. As movers, we have had customers with a large number of items see their move finish surprisingly quickly when their things are organized and packed with minimal smaller loose items and clutter. We have also seen seemingly small moves take far longer than expected in large part because it was a disorganized move with many items that were not well packed.
Organization is probably the most important factor that can help you save time when it comes to packing and moving. Since the cost of your move is based on the time it takes, this will lead to savings on the day of your move.
Another important thing you can do to prepare for your move is to go through your belongings and get rid of anything that you no longer need or use. Consider donating or selling items that are still in good condition. When you have decided what you would like to move to your next place, remember that better organization is key to making your move go faster, more smoothly, and with minimal stress.
- Create a packing plan
Create a packing plan and start packing non-essential items as soon as possible. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. This can help you stay organized and make unpacking easier later on. Pack fragile items with care, using bubble wrap or packing paper to protect them.
- Notify utility companies and service providers
Notify utility companies and service providers, such as your internet provider, cable provider, and utility companies, about your move. Make sure to schedule the disconnection of services at your old home and the connection of services at your new home.
- Change your address
Change your address with Canada Post at least two weeks before your move. This can be done online or in person at your local post office. Make sure to also update your address with banks, credit card companies, and other important organizations.
- Hire a moving company
You will need to hire a professional moving company. Be sure to research and compare companies to find one that meets your needs and budget. Make sure to get a written estimate and read reviews from previous customers. It may be tempting to go with the cheapest estimate you get, but we highly recommend that you consider the reputation of the companies you are considering.
It is not uncommon for less reputable movers to add unexpected charges that could increase your bill significantly. There is also the possibility of mishandling your things, which could lead to unnecessary damage. Additionally, some of them may not even show up on the day of your move with no warning beforehand, leaving their customers in a very stressful situation. It is not uncommon for us to receive calls, particularly at busier times for our industry, from desperate customers in need of last-minute moving services to meet deadlines, whose movers did not show up, without giving any warning.
Unfortunately, due to reputable moving companies having limited availability for new bookings at peak times, having a less reputable company fail to show up often leaves the customer in a very difficult situation. These are just some of the ways that hiring the wrong mover can cost you, even if at first they get your interest by offering the lowest quote.
At Innercity Moving and Storage, we are confident that after doing your research, you will see that we are one of the best moving companies in the GTA. A reliable company you can trust to move your belongings efficiently and with as much care as possible. We have been helping people move in the Greater Toronto Area for over 30 years. Whether you are moving a house, condo/apartment or business, you can trust us to get the job done right no matter how big or small it is, while delivering excellent customer service and honesty in our pricing.
- Pack a first-night box
Pack a first-night box with essential items that you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home. This can include toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding, and other necessary items.
- Confirm details with your moving company
Confirm details with your moving company a few days before your move. This includes the date and time of your move, the address of your new home, and any special instructions. At Innercity Moving and Storage, we sometimes get calls from customers whose movers did not show up at the last minute on the day of their move. This will not be an issue you will face if you choose us, as we have been in business for over 30 years and are a well-organized and reliable company. Unfortunately, there are too many companies that are not as well run. However, even if the company you choose is one of these companies, making a call to them shortly before the move to confirm your booking is a way to greatly reduce the likelihood of being left stranded on the day you need to move.
By following this checklist, you can ensure a successful and stress-free move. Remember to plan ahead, stay organized, and take the time to declutter and organize your belongings before packing. With a little preparation and effort, you’ll be settled into your new home in no time.
