Moving can be an exciting and stressful experience at the same time. Whether you’re moving across the street, across town or to a new province, planning ahead is important to ensure a smooth and successful move. To help you stay organized, here is a checklist of the most important things to do before a move.
1. Declutter and organize
Before packing, it’s highly recommended to declutter and organize your belongings. This is the best tip to ensure your move goes smoothly. As movers, we have had customers with many items see their move finish surprisingly quickly when their things are organized and packed with minimal smaller loose items and clutter. We have also seen seemingly small moves take far longer than expected, largely because it was disorganized, with many items that needed to be better packed. Organization is the most important factor that can help you save time when packing and moving. Since the cost of your move is based on the time it takes, this will lead to savings on the day of your move.
Another important thing you can do to prepare for your move is to go through your belongings and get rid of anything that you no longer need or use. Consider donating or selling items that are still in good condition. When you have decided what you would like to move to your next place, remember that better organization is key to making your move go faster, more smoothly, and with minimal stress.
2. Create a packing plan
Create a packing plan and start packing non-essential items as soon as possible. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. This can help you stay organized and make unpacking easier later on. Pack fragile items carefully, using bubble wrap or packing paper to protect them.
3. Notify utility companies and service providers
Notify utility companies and service providers about your move, such as your internet provider, cable provider, and utility companies. Make sure to schedule the disconnection of services at your old home and the connection of services at your new home.
4. Change your address
Change your address with Canada Post at least two weeks before your move. This can be done online or in-person at your local post office. Ensure you also update your address with banks, credit card companies, and other important organizations.
5. Hire a moving company
You will need to hire a professional moving company. Research and compare different companies to find one that meets your needs and budget. Make sure to get a written estimate and read reviews from previous customers. It may be tempting to go with the cheapest estimate you get, but we highly recommend that you consider the reputation of the companies you are considering.
It is common for less reputable movers to add unexpected charges that could significantly increase your bill. There is also the possibility of mishandling your things, leading to unnecessary damage. Additionally, some may not even show up on the day of your move with no warning beforehand, leaving their customers in a very stressful situation. It is not uncommon for us to receive calls, particularly at busier times for our industry, from desperate customers in need of last minute moving services to meet deadlines, whose movers did not show up without giving any warning. Unfortunately, due to reputable moving companies having limited availability for new bookings at peak times, having a less reputable company fail to show up often leaves the customer in a very difficult situation. These are just some ways that hiring the wrong mover can cost you, even if they initially get your interest by offering the lowest quote.

6. Pack a first-night box
Pack a first-night box with essential items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home. This can include toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding, and other necessary items.
7. Confirm details with your moving company
Confirm details with your moving company a few days before your move. This includes the date and time of your move, the address of your new home, and any special instructions. At Innercity Moving and Storage, we sometimes get calls from customers whose movers did not show up at the last minute on the day of their move. This will be fine if you choose us, as we have been in business for over 30 years and are a well organized and reliable company. But there are too many companies that could be better run. But even if the company you choose is one of these companies, calling them shortly before the move to confirm your booking is a way to significantly reduce the likelihood of being left stranded on the day you need to move.
By following this checklist, you can ensure a successful and stress-free move. Remember to plan, stay organized, and take the time to declutter and organize your belongings before packing. With some preparation and effort, you’ll be settled into your new home in no time.
